Reporting for your practical test :Cross Stitch – Motoring

When you go for your practical driving test you must take certain documents with you. You must also bring an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle suitable for the test. Find out what you need to bring with you on the day.

You must bring the following documents with you. If you do not bring the right documents:

  • the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test
  • you may lose your fee

For all types of tests

Bring both parts of your driving licence

You must bring your theory test pass certificate (or confirmation) if you are not exempt.

You must also bring both parts of your driving licence – the photocard and the paper counterpart.

If you have an old-style paper licence, you must take your signed driving licence and you must also bring a valid passport.

No other form of photographic identification will be accepted.

If you don’t:

  • your test may not go ahead
  • you may lose your fee

You must also bring your:

  • compulsory basic training certificate (CBT) to both modules
  • motorcycle module one test pass certificate to your module two test (please contact the DSA immediately if you lose this)

For lorry and bus tests

You must also bring both your multiple choice and hazard perception pass letters or your overall theory test pass certificate letter.

What to do if you have lost your driving licence

If you misplace your driving licence, you must apply for a replacement from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This could take up to 15 days. If this happens, you may have to rearrange your test.

The examiner will ask if you want your instructor, or another person, to:

  • go with you on your driving test and sit in the back of the car
  • be there at the end of the test for the result and feedback

The person you take with you on your test

DSA encourages you to take someone with you on your driving test. They:

  • will usually be the person who has taught you to drive
  • could be a relative or friend
  • must be over 16 years old
  • cannot take any part in the test
  • will be able to see how you perform during the test

To get the most benefit, ask your instructor to go with you. They can then give you advice on how to improve your driving, whether you pass or fail.

The examiner’s supervisor

The examiner’s supervisor may come along as well. You shouldn’t worry about this as they will be watching the examiner’s performance, not yours. The supervisor will not have a say in how you are tested or in your result. If you don’t allow the examiner’s supervisor to go with you:

  • you might lose your test fee
  • your test might not go ahead

Impersonators and people who use their services have been:

  • convicted in the criminal courts
  • given prison sentences

Beware of anyone offering to have someone impersonate you and take your practical driving or riding test for you.

Driving test impersonation – the law

Practical test candidate impersonators and people who accept their services are:

  • breaking the law
  • causing other road users to be put at risk

DSA:

  • thoroughly investigates every case of suspected impersonation
  • works closely with police to identify offenders and take them to court

Impersonators and people who use their services have been:

  • convicted in the criminal courts
  • given prison sentences
